Assessment Structure

City Profile
Data about demographics and statistics like how many pets a city has, and what features and programs it offers, such as pet-friendly parks.
City Survey
An evaluation on traits in the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ model, for example whether shelters are welcoming and whether city disaster planning includes pets.
A plan for the future. To earn and maintain BETTER CITY FOR PETS™ certification, cities need to be taking action on at least one priority that helps increase pet-friendliness.

Common Questions

How long will it take?

Plan to spend about an hour for a first run-through. You may need additional research to complete the assessment fully. You can save at any time and return to the assessment later.

What happens next?

When you’re finished, you’ll get your results along with recommendations and tools. You’ll hear within a few days whether your city has received BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ certification.

Who can use the assessment?

It’s designed to help communities of all sizes. You can focus on your city, a subsection (like your downtown core), or your city plus surrounding areas.

How are results determined?

Responses are scored and City Certification is determined by a city's total score. The assessment depends on fact-based self-reporting by cities.
